We had our first meeting at Professor Campbell’s house in Winona. Some of the students knew each other already, but tonight was a good way for everyone to be introduced and get to know each other.

There was a collective groan when Professor Campbell announced the ice breaker game. Memories of freshmen orientation week came rushing back to everyone and someone yelled, “It’s orientation week all over again!”
We got worldly advice from Professor Alex Hines about southern mannerisms and how to talk about the Civil Rights Movement to different age groups, and learned that “yes ma’am” and “yes sir” are the right way to address someone.

Joe Morse, a veteran of the Civil Rights Movement from Winona, Minn., spoke about his experiences working in Mississippi and Alabama in 1964. Morse will be traveling with us for the full two weeks and sharing more of his experiences with us along the way.

We also learned who is a morning person and who isn’t. For those who aren’t, we were asked what makes us get up and going in the morning. The most popular answers were food, coffee, music and peace and quiet.
It was a good time and before we knew it we were saying goodbye and “see ya next Monday.”
